All-round effort a relief to Rogers as Hughes and Footitt earn praise
DERBYSHIRE'S seven-wicket victory in Schiedam was one of the Falcons' best all-round one-day performances for years and that was both a relief and a huge satisfaction for captain Chris Rogers.
"It was a bit of a low point, losing to the Dutch at home, and to lose to them twice would have been tough to swallow," he said.
"We played pretty well from the beginning all the way through to the end this time. The fact that we won and won well will be good for us.
"Once the first 30 overs had gone, they were always up against it and even if they did play well at the back end, they weren't really going to post an impossible target.
"We could have knocked them over for a bit less but 180 was well within reach."
Rogers and Chesney Hughes made sure it was firmly in reach with an opening stand of 111 and the Australian was especially pleased to see his partner go on to strike a solid 72 after making a crucial contribution in the field – a fine diving catch at midwicket to remove the dangerous Michael Dighton.
"I said to Ches it was one of those days where you can't go out to hit the boundaries and you had to play an intelligent innings," Rogers added.
"I thought we both played pretty well and once we set the team up, I was confident there weren't going to be any dramas.
"Ches' catch was one of those moments that can change a game and he deserved to get runs after a really special catch."
Rogers also praised Mark Footitt, who took his first wickets in one-day cricket and finished with 3-27.
"It was a bit of a gamble playing Footy because the wicket looked like it was going to be a bit of a slow one but I just felt maybe the Dutch hadn't seen a lot of his pace and they would find that a bit harder," said Rogers.
"He got a crucial wicket by getting Tom Cooper, who I know can play, and came back well at the death. Hopefully, he will be one of the guys who get a lot out of this trip."
