What's on around Derbyshire this weekend
It looks like the weather this weekend isn't going to be too bad, so a good time to get out and about at the many things going on around Derbyshire.
Lea Gardens is a beautiful Rhododendron Garden just outside the village of Lea, close to Matlock. The Garden is situated within a woodland walk, with over five hundred varieties of rhododendrons, azaleas and other plants to enjoy. The Garden is open to the public for viewing and plant sales from Friday March 1st and they also have a Tea Garden Café, serving homemade cakes and light lunches.
Umbrella Belper Parents and Carers Group are holding a fundraising fashion show on Friday 1st March, 2013, at Belper Town Football Club, from 7pm to 10.30pm. Tickets are £5 each and include a welcome drink. The fashion show will display clothes from many high street stores such as Next, Wallis, Oasis, Evans, Monsoon as well as French and Italian designer clothes. It's an ideal opportunity to get your Spring/Summer wardrobe sorted at bargain prices! There will also be a selection of stalls offering gifts and greetings cards.
Umbrella is a registered charity that supports disabled children and young people and their families in Derby city and Southern Derbyshire. Umbrella holds four support groups in Southern Derbyshire which gives parents and carers an opportunity to come together, support each other and receive useful tips and information. The Belper support group is held every second Thursday of the month, from 10am – 12pm at The Strutts Community Centre, Derby Road. Step back to the 1940's and explore the music, song, dance, fashion and aspects of everyday life in wartime Britain at the Chesterfield 1940's Weekend, from the 1st to the 3rd March. There will be a whole host of events at Chesterfield Museum, the Winding Wheel and the Pomegranate Theatre, including a Forties Market, a Swing Jive dance, and 1940's Party.
On Friday, there will be a Swing Jive Dance with Swingamathing, professional band and specialists in 40's jazz style music, at The Winding Wheel, from 8 pm. Tickets cost £7.50. The 40's Vintage Fair will be on at The Winding Wheel from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday. To include a vintage market, live entertainment and 40's style cafe. Tickets cost £4 per day. Also on Saturday, a 40's Party at The Winding Wheel, at 7.30 pm. Tickets are £8.50. The ballroom will be turned into an air raid shelter with sandbags, camouflage netting, flags and more.
There will be a free Living History Display at Chesterfield Museum, on Saturday and Sunday, when you can experience life on the home front with a re-enactment. From 10 am to 4 pm. With vintage cars and wartime firemen and equipment. On Sunday, there will also be a screening of Brief Encounter, the classic wartime tale of impossible love, starrind Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. At The Pomegranate Theatre, from 2 pm. The Buxton Buzz Comedy Club, at the Pavilion Arts Centre, Pavilion Gardens, will feature stand up comedy from Brendan Riley, Tony Cowards and Stella Graham on Friday, 1st March, at 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm, show starts at 8.15pm. Aurora Percussion Duo, Le Yu and Delia Stevens will be playing a mixture of original compositions and classical favourites at Buxton Pavilion Arts Centre on Friday, at 1pm. Tickets are £6 and can be booked by phoning the Box Office on 0845 127 2190.
Boeing Boeing, the theatrical comedy comes to Buxton Opera House on the 28th February and the 1st and 2nd March. It all boils down to juggling timetables and a reliable maid who never forgets to change the photographs. Bernard juggles three flight attendant fiancées, successfully convincing each that she is the only one. However when old school friend Robert arrives unexpectedly, a new faster Boeing jet is introduced and weather delays occur, Bernard, Robert and Bertha the maid are forced to desperately try to keep the women separate. The lies told become more and more difficult to reconcile as the trio improvise at breathtaking speed in a near faultless piece of theatrical invention with the inevitable hilarious consequences. 7.30pm on the 28th February, 7.30pm on 1st March and 2.30pm and 7.30pm on the 2nd March. The People's Theatre Company present The Elephant Bridesmaid at 1.30pm and 3.30pm on the 2nd March at the Pavilion Arts Centre Studio, Buxton. Written especially for parents to enjoy with their children, The Elephant Bridesmaid is a magical musical about weddings and wombats and the loveliest elephant the world has ever known. Full of games, songs and elephant antics. Join Nessie the Elephant and her animal friends and help them as they go in search of an outfit fancy enough (and large enough) to make her the Australian jungle's first and most beautiful Elephant Bridesmaid.

There's lots happening at Buxton's Pavilion Arts Centre over the weekend. Toby Hadoke - My Stepson Stole My Sonic Screwdriver On the 2nd March, at 7.30pm, you could see the Toby Hadoke comedy, My Stepson Stole My Sonic Screwdriver, the bittersweet comedy of parenting through sci-fi evangelism.
There will be a jazz concert at the Pavilion Arts Centre by The Trefor Owen and Shades of Shearing quartet at 1pm on Sunday. Tickets £5. Also at the Arts Centre, on Sunday, at 7.30pm, Rohan McCullough will be appearing in, Testament of Youth, the haunting biography by Vera Brittain, published in 1933 and evoking her experiences of the First World War. Go behind the scenes with TV's favourite wildlife man, Bill Oddie his producer Stephen Moss, at Buxton Opera House, on the 3rd March. Also in Buxton, on Sunday will be the Antique and Collectors' Fair at The Pavilion Gardens, from 9am to 4.30pm.
Music fans can enjoy funk/soul songs from The Kerry Fernandez Band, on Friday, at the Fishpond, in Matlock Bath, from 9pm and experience lively and fast paced, old skool punk rock from the Midlands based four piece band, Verbal Warning, on Saturday, at The Poet and Castle, Ripley. 9pm.
The Black Hands will perform their mix of Southern blues and rock music at the Fishpond, on Saturday at 9pm and there will be candle lit cabaret at the Fishpond on Sunday, from 8pm; an acoustic performance evening with different acts on every month. £2 on the door.
On Saturday, Vintage Sports Car Club members from across Britain will gather for the annual John Harris Derbyshire Trials. Watch as they take on the various challenging stages at Ashover, Beeley, Darley Bridge and the Winster area, in their pre 1940 vintage cars.
There are a number of exhibitions on at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, including Enlightenment! With the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund over the last five years, Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, Belper North Mill and Derby Museums have been buying objects that help tell the story of Derbyshire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This exhibition showcases all the purchases, from oil paintings and scientific instruments to prints and cotton reels. On until Sunday 14th April.
It's Wirksworth Farmers Market on Saturday morning. You can expect a wide range of organic and traditionally farmed produce and lots of lovely food stalls. From 8.30am.
The next Heanor Community Fair will be held on Saturday, from 9am to 1pm. Go along and support independent businesses and local groups. There will be a wide range stalls and entertainment from The Full House Orchestra. Refreshments will also be on sale.
On Saturday and Sunday, there's to be a craft fair at The Grand Pavilion, in Matlock Bath. Showcasing a range of local crafters. A place to pick up unique gifts just in time for Mother's Day and Easter. A variety of stalls will be offering cards and cakes, jewellery and knitwear, felt and fabric, ribbons and bows, chocolate, candy floss and more. 11am to 5pm both days. Entry is free.
Erewash Museum is set to travel back in time to Edwardian days for a themed day of fun activities for all the family on Saturday 2nd March. The free Downton Abbey style event will run from 11am to 3pm and visitors will be able to experience the elegance of Edwardian Britain, learn about the suffragettes and their fight for political rights and discover the foods that would have been eaten at the time. An exhibition of costumes dating from the period will also be on display and visitors will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken in Edwardian dress. Finally, there will be a Wedding Fayre at Makeney Hall Hotel, Milford, Belper, on Sunday, 3rd March, from 11.00am To 4.00pm. It's free admission and gives you the chance to meet with various wedding suppliers and discuss your wedding day plans with a wedding coordinator. There will also be a prize draw to 'Win a Wedding' at Makeney Hall Hotel.
