There's much support for gay marriage, cardinal

THE Cardinal of Westminster's latest diatribe against gay marriage does not accord with the facts and is an aggravating addition to previous remarks.

To make matters worse, the cardinal has opined that gay marriage has little public support, which is manifestly untrue, as the opinion polls clearly indicate. That the cardinal, who by dint of habit and training must be well versed in Christian culture, should have so far strayed from the truth must be strongly condemned.

It is most encouraging that many Catholics approve of gay marriage and several Catholic legislators have indicated support.

They will vote according to conscience, uncontaminated by prejudice emanating from Rome.

In short, the Catholic position on gay marriage depends on who you are talking to!

Maybe the green shoots of democracy are spouting in Catholic cloisters. Who knows!

“Stanvax, it's good to see there's at least two of us here living in the 21st century where tolerance of one's fellow human beings is allowed. I don't know where dave12548 lives but I reckon it would be easy enough to find out - just look for the road with a sign saying 'No dogs, Irish, Blacks, Asians, Queers or anyone with a tolerant broad mind'.

p.s. I see the red arrows have been out again.”

“As a straight, white middle-aged, married man, can I say that I fully support marriage for gay people.

Gay people are perfectly entitled to share in any institution available to straight people

Why people want to stand in the way of people being happy, when they are not disadvantaged themselves by the change, is what I don't understand.”

“janine2011 says, "when the minority are panded to to the detriment of the majority."

What 'detriment' are you talking about? I do not feel my mixed-sex marriage is or will be denigrated or cheapened by the fact same-sex marriages can go ahead. If two people love each other, arguably the strongest way to publicly express this is by getting married. Are you really so mean-minded as to prevent some people from doing this simply because they are of the same gender?”

“I polled my family and friends on this subject, funnily enough out of some 200+ people not one of them agreed with it. In fact as one put it, democracy is well and truely dead when the minority are panded to to the detriment of the majority.”

“But you don't allow democracy, Daniel, not on this subject.

Anyone who disagrees with you is prejudiced, bigoted, is to be condemned, has been contaminated, has strayed from 'the truth' and when they express their opinion, as they are entitled to do, they do so in a 'diatribe' or a 'rant.'

But you can't see that, because you are oh so bloody right.”
