Sporty Spice is the last member of the hit band to have a child, following in the footsteps of Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton. The 34-year-old singer, who has been with property developer boyfriend Thomas Starr for six years, announced the news on her website.
Mel C, real name Melanie Chisholm, said: "Some happy news. Well, I can now announce that Tom and I are expecting a baby and we are very happy.
"As I'm sure you'll understand we needed time to wait for results and tell our families.
"I will be taking it easy but am also excited to start writing for the fifth album.
"I will need to take some time off to be a mum but, before you know it, we'll be back."
The ex-Spice Girl, who was credited with the best voice in the band but battled eating disorders in the Spice Girls' heyday, had in the past spoken about not wanting children just yet. In an interview published just three weeks ago, she said: "Don't mention the 'B' word! Everybody asks whether I'm going to be next or whether I'm trying at the moment.
"I hate to disappoint people, but the answer is 'no'."
She sparked rumours that she was expecting just days ago when she wore a floaty dress at a show in Liverpool.
