I shudder to think what will be in old pub's place
I READ with amazement the article regarding the possible demolition of the Late Bar in Ford Street, Derby("Eyesore could make way for 'unique' show home to entice Europe's elite", February 7),
The architect of the nearly-completed office block across the road has had the exterior clad in copper, believing, possibly, that it will make it blend in and be more pleasing to the eye. Completely wrong – another blot on the landscape, just like the Friar Gate Studios across the road.
I am at a loss to understand, as this is one of the few areas in Derby with many historical buildings still being allowed to stand, how the planners can look at the plans for the two buildings noted above and think that it would be a good idea to let them go ahead.
The owner, if his plans are accepted, intends to demolish The Late Bar and build a showroom with apartments above. I shudder to think what this will look like.

“But of course people have been saying the same things for centuries: "That new wooden construction is completely out of character with the surrounding wattle and daub," etcetera.”

“I passed the Ford street copper monolith this morning. Yet again, another building that is completely 'in your face'- impossible to ignore from almost any angle, unless you hide in the shadow of a very forlorn Friargate bridge. Yet another unsympathetic design, only making a slight nod to the past with it's retro fifties American motel look. It would have been far more suited to Traffic street. Or the Arizona desert. I think that if I have to pass it every day, I shall have to acquire some blinkers. I wonder if the planning department will lend me some of theirs?”

“It annoys me that most new buildings come right up to the pavement. The planners seem to have no expectation that roads may need widening and sight lines improved at some time in the future. Replacing a two storey building with a 6 storey building - on the same sized plot is very intrusive. Roads will become like canyons.”
