REDEMPTION for Derbyshire's most humiliating defeat of the season came with a seven-wicket win at Schiedam yesterday.

The Falcons marked their first official fixture outside the UK with a convincing Clydesdale Bank 40 performance against the Netherlands to make amends, in part at least, for their seven-wicket humbling at the County Ground two months ago.

An opening stand of 111 in 22 overs between Chris Rogers and Chesney Hughes broke the back of a moderate Dutch total of 181-9 and there were three overs in hand when Derbyshire clinched only their second win of this season's competition.

Rogers was allowed the most fortunate of lives on 31 – caught off a no-ball called because Netherlands had too many fielders outside the circle.

And he went on to make 56, with Hughes almost seeing the job through to the close with 72, his highest 40-over score of the season.

This was the first time an English county had played at the pretty Thurlede ground – a tree-lined and serene setting in the suburbs of Rotterdam.

The square is new and untested, though the scores in two international matches between Canada and Kenya earlier this month suggested scoring would be slow.

That made the decision to field after winning the toss a good one for Derbyshire and the plan worked perfectly.

Tight bowling left the Netherlands in deep trouble when their fifth wicket went down for 89 in the 25th over.

Tim Groenewald took a couple of wickets and so did Steffan Jones, who ended Michael Dighton's chances of damaging his former county again and tied the Dutch up with 3-27 in his seven overs.

The home side had not played smartly enough on a wicket that called for straight hitting but the fall of the fifth wicket brought Mudassar Bukhari to the middle and, single-handedly, he gave his side a chance.

Perhaps it was the early blow to the unmentionables that galvanised Bukhari but he went on to make 69 not out off 52 balls.

He hit three sixes and eight fours, while the rest of the team put together contributed only four more fours and one six.

For a time, it seemed Bukhari's clean striking might push the score close to 200 but Mark Footitt returned to the attack for the 38th over and made it a double-wicket maiden after ending the 68-ball resistance of Bas Zuiderent for 31.

The young left-armer had never taken a wicket in limited-overs cricket before this game but also finished with an excellent 3-27.

For all Bukhari's efforts, the target was well within Derbyshire's scope, provided they played with good sense, and the openers gave them just the start they needed.

Rogers' scare came with the score on 65 in the 12th over and the Falcons might have had an awkward moment or two more had the Dutch skipper set his field properly.

But there was barely a hint of trouble for Derbyshire after that, though Rogers was caught behind reaching for a wide ball from Dighton, who had to settle for a couple of wickets instead of the more meaningful unbeaten 110 in the first meeting of the sides.

Hughes was finally run out going for the quick single that would have tied the scores and that was a pity.

His runs came off 113 balls with five fours and a six in what was a completely efficient and professional display from Derbyshire.
