Angling: Familiar faces lead way for new club
Newly-formed Derby Outcast AC travelled to Birch House Lakes for their very first match, which was fished on the Silver Fish lake.
But it was former Rolls-Royce AC member Glynn Whitby who took top weight with 7lb 6oz from peg 21.
A solitary bonus mirror carp weighing 1lb 7oz in among a new of roach and skimmer bream helped to boost Whitby's final weight.
All fish were taken on bloodworm and joker.
Sitting on the next peg to Whitby was Nigel Harrison, who secured second place with 5lb 14oz 11drms.
He used bloodworm for his catch, while Andy Orton, sitting on the other side of the winner, had a good final hour to put together a bag totalling 3lb 12oz 14drms for third place.
Ryan Brown was the top junior, landing 2lb 13oz 11drms.
This result was enough to see him finish fifth overall.
The early pegs struggled to put a decent weight together, two anglers failing to catch and another three unable to break the 1lb mark.
The club's next match is on the canal at Branston Water Park on December 12.
Matt Needham netted five carp to win the latest open match at Rycroft Fishery.
Using pellet on the pole, he tipped the scales with 27lb 6oz in the 17-peg contest on the Donington Lake.
Dave Thomas was second with 25lb 12oz, while Norman Powers was third with 21lb 8oz.
There were contrasting fortunes in the Wednesday and Thursday open matches at Makins Fishery last week.
Those who took part in the Wednesday open, which was fished on Lakes Two and Four, had a westerly gale to deal with.
Only areas where there was shelter from the wind were pegged but, unfortunately, the fish had vacated these areas.
Taking top weight with 20lb from Lake Two was Higham Lane Fishery boss John Varley.
His net was made up of three carp all landed in the first hour from peg A20.
Northampton's Mark Griffiths was second with 19lb 10oz, followed by a 16lb 8oz from Coventry angler Eddie Keane.
Match organiser John Adamson won the Thursday open, which fished brilliantly despite strong winds for a second successive day.
Adamson was fishing from Lagoon Peg three and caught 54lb 2oz, consisting of nine carp, a barbel and a tench, along with a few skimmers.
All were taken on method feeder baited with pellet, corn and meat.
Fishing long pole and corn from peg 23, Korum ace Andy Findlay put together a 43lb 10oz net of carp, roach and skimmers for second place.
Attleborough Angling's Andy Inglesant (39lb 10oz) was third.
