Brewers brought back down to earth by heavy defeat

Brewers boss Nigel Clough had warned that Stevenage were much better than their poor start to the season suggested and, buoyed by an early goal, they proved him right.
There was not much any defence could have done about the home side’s opening goal in the third minute, as Lawrie Wilson’s cross from the right was met by a first-time volley from Lee Boylan that flew inside Kevin Poole’s right-hand post.
But Stevenage were already showing they were well up for the game and a first-time shot by Steve Morison had to be pushed away to his right by Poole in the fifth minute.
Borough keeper Chris Day saved to his right when Keith Gilroy cut inside to shoot after 18 minutes but the home side scored again within seconds.
Jake Buxton passed back to Poole and Morison charged down the keeper’s clearance, the ball trickling over the line.
Boylan shot wide from a good position after being put through by Bostwick three minutes later and although Burton came more into the game as the half went on, Stevenage were regularly first to the ball in midfield.
Burton’s best move of the half came in stoppage time, when Harrad, Greg Pearson and John McGrath combined to set up a chance for Gilroy but Day made a fine save to turn away the winger’s shot to his left.
The Brewers were looking at a real hiding when Morison completed his hat-trick with two goals in a minute 10 minutes after the restart.
The first was beautifully done as Daryl McMahon swung in a free kick from the right, Luke Oliver headed it back at the far post and Morison volleyed it in from eight yards.
He then chased a long ball forward and although Ryan Austin got ahead of him, the Burton centre half kicked thin air with his attempted back pass to Poole and Morison slipped in front of him to bang the ball into the top corner of the net.
Day had to dive to his right to turn away a curling free kick from Jody Banim after 74 minutes and, a minute later, Andy Corbett ran through to pull one back with a strong finish from 15 yards.
Even so, not much had gone right for Burton all day and they finished well beaten.
