Burton Albion: Pesch pays no attention to the table

Friday, October 09, 2009, 07:29

PAUL Peschisolido is paying no attention to the League Two table ahead of tomorrow's trip to Grimsby Town.

The Mariners currently lie third from bottom of the Football League, while the Brewers – boosted by last weekend's 1-0 victory over high-flying Rochdale – are mid-table in 12th place.

However, only five points separate the two sides and Grimsby enjoyed a morale-boosting midweek win over League One side Hartlepool in the Jonhstone's Paint Trophy.

While delighted with the result and performance against Rochdale, Peschisolido knows Burton are in no position to take anything for granted.

"I don't pay any attention to the table," he said. "You need to make sure you don't get drawn into that.

"In every league, you see teams at the bottom beating teams higher up the table, so our position doesn't count for anything.

"It will be the team that turns up and performs on the day and has the right attitude that will win the match.

"We have prepared properly and worked hard in training. We only need to worry about ourselves and make sure we are physically and mentally right."

Peschisolido added: "I remember playing against Grimsby in the Championship. They are a big club at this level, with plenty of years of League football under their belt.

"They have a manager (Mike Newell) who has managed at Championship level too and he knows his stuff, so it will be another tough game."

Peschisolido should travel to Blundell Park with no injury worries.

The game has come a little too soon for winger Keith Gilroy, who returned to action following a hamstring injury in midweek.

Gilroy played 45 minutes of the 4-1 Birmingham Senior Cup win over Coleshill Town on Tuesday night – his first outing in nearly six months.

"It was great to see Keith back in midweek but Grimsby is a bit too soon for him," said Peschisolido.

"He was only meant to play 25 minutes on Tuesday but stuck it out for 45 in the end, and came through unscathed.

"We are delighted to have him back. He is a huge asset for us."

Striker Shaun Harrad, meanwhile, returned to full training yesterday after recovering from a groin problem, so is back in contention.

Peschisolido has plenty of options up front, even after he cut short Robin Shroot's loan from Birmingham City earlier this week.

"I just thought it was best if he went back," was all the Burton boss would say on the matter.

Shroot had struggled to hold down a regular place in the side and was an unused substitute against Rochdale.

"I'm very happy with the squad we have got," said Peschisolido, who has no plans to replace Shroot.

"Team selection is very tough at the moment but it is a good problem to have.

"Everyone in the squad works extremely hard in training and their attitude on and off the pitch is spot on.

"I now have two good players for every position, which is a great situation to be in."

Grimsby will be missing striker Barry Conlon and midfielder Danny Boshell due to suspension.
