Rams wait on DJ decision but miss out on keeper Fielding
But they have been knocked back in their attempt to sign Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Frank Fielding.
Rams boss Nigel Clough wants to boost his squad with two players, a pacy striker and keeper, before Thursday's 5pm deadline for emergency loans.
Clough has asked Leicester about 28-year-old Campbell, who has struggled to win a place in the Foxes' team this season.
"There are lots of phone calls at the moment and a goalkeeper and striker are two we are looking for," said Clough.
"We have contacted Leicester and are waiting to hear from them.
"He (Campbell) is one of a few players we have asked about."
Clough is confident of bringing in a forward to help boost attacking options.
Derby currently have Chris Porter, Steve Davies and Kris Commons on the sidelines, meaning Rob Hulse and Paul Dickov are the only two fit frontmen.
"I think we will get somebody in but it is about getting the right quality. I think the main criteria is pace. The player must have a bit of pace."
Saul Deeney's ankle injury has left Derby looking for cover for number one keeper Stephen Bywater. They tried to sign Fielding from Blackburn in the summer and have now missed out on the England Under-21 international again.
"They (Blackburn) have knocked us back," said Clough.
"They do not want to let him out at the moment, so we are exploring other options."
Fielding, 21, has had loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers, Northampton Town, Rochdale and Leeds United but has yet to make a senior appearance for Blackburn.
