DERBY County suffered a 3-2 defeat at Barnsley in the Championship tonight.

The Rams trailed 3-0 at half-time but pulled two goals back after the break.

Barnsley proved there is life after Ricardo Vaz Te as they consigned Derby to their first defeat in seven npower Championship games.

The Tykes put the impending departure of leading scorer Vaz Te to West Ham United behind them and produced a first-half display which swept previously in-form Derby aside.

Matt Done opened the scoring after a fine move, then an Andy Gray penalty and Scott Wiseman’s first goal for the Yorkshire club stunned the Rams.

Nigel Clough’s side were a different side in the second half and dominated possession but although Jamie Ward pulled a goal back with a fine free-kick and Tom Carroll scored a late debut goal, the damage had already been done.

The visitors had conceded just one goal in their previous five Championship games but they were made to pay for some sloppy first-half defending.

The Tykes had Derby on the back foot from the off and it needed a magnificent reflex save from Frank Fielding to keep out Jim McNulty’s header from an inviting Michael Tonge corner nine minutes in.

But Keith Hill’s side were in front just a minute later when a slick four-man move resulted in Done beating Fielding with a measured finish.

The Rams were not at the races and they were two behind after just 21 minutes, when Gray blasted a penalty straight down the middle to give Fielding no chance after Done had been tugged back by John Brayford.

And it came as no surprise when the home side added a third goal after 29 minutes, when more neat passing cut open the Derby defence and full-back Wiseman produced a tidy finish to open his account for the Tykes.

Tonge, who also spent a spell on loan with Derby, was enjoying an impressive debut and the midfielder called Fielding into action once again as the former Blackburn keeper palmed the ball away.

The travelling Derby fans voiced their displeasure at the half-time whistle and Rams boss Clough clearly had a few choice words to say to his side at the break, as his side looked far more lively after the resumption.

Ward had a chance to reduce the deficit but the diminutive forward’s attempted lob was easily caught by Luke Steele.

Ward gave Derby a lifeline after 68 minutes when he rifled home a free-kick from 25 yards which appeared to go through the wall.

Barnsley were struggling to get out of their own half as Derby bossed the midfield and Ward fired another strike just over the crossbar.

Derby debutant Carroll had a big shout for a penalty but referee Andy Woolmer waved play on and although the on-loan Tottenham midfielder pulled another goal back deep into stoppage-time, the Tykes held on for all three points.

“We are building a good young squad with tight financial controls, and a bad 45 mins every now and again is to be expected.
As Mr Clough keeps on building, and the finances become healthier we will be again a strong competative club in the top flight, for many years.
What we can't do is go back in time and over pay the over rated, who turn up to play 50% [if we are lucky!] of the time, eg commons!”

last few months you should know that Green has not signed the contract
he has been offered at D.C.F.C BLAH BLAH BLAH ,so as is the norm players
are not played in case of injury ....simple.

Bailey i'll stick to him being rested and N.C wanting to give Carroll a run out ,
therefore fresh legs in the engineroom ,anyways dont mention me in the same sentence

    second half ???
    Did Bailey come on ?..NO.
    Did Green ?....NO.

The vast majority of fans Know what D.C.F.C are trying to do,Bailey

“RiverSow Ram - agree with your comments entirely. The fact we lost badly last night is no reason to call for NC's head, while winning on Sunday would be no reason to assume he is the Messiah. It is fair and reasonable to ask why both midfield players were left out - OK Green because he thought he was leaving - but then surely you don't tinker with the other position from the start? Anyhow, last night is gone, mistakes were made by both manager and players in that first half. Now the challenge is to motivate the staff we have to produce a barnstorming end to the season - and hopefully finish with the public talk of which players will be in / out / loaned etc. The squad is small enough for NC to embrace them all - and use them all in the remaining fixtures when needed - instead of ex-communicating some - like Maguire and, seemingly Addison”

“@JimSmithisGod - did you leave before the end? It was 12-0 v Finn Harps ;) What a great night that was though - five for Kevin Hector and a Charlie George hat trick. Wish I had a time machine to go back and bring some of those players to the present day.”

“Clough says he cannot understand where the rubbish 1st half performance came from - Its not difficult Mr Clough ! You took out our best 2 midfielders green & bailey, and any derby fan who think that we could get by without them - think again, 3-0 down to barnsley inside 30 mins ! It really is no coincidence that are recent run of wins is down to green, barker & brayford returning from injury. And though i have supported derby since we beat finn harps 11-0, i have never ever known any football team, in any league, in any financial position, leave there 2 best players out of a match - just in case any body wants to buy them ( i say buy them, as we all know we dont accept money for any of our players, probably a bag of crisps & a mars bar ). That really tells us all what our club is all about. Mr clough has to go to any lower league/ scottish league pick out unknown 18 year olds, pay them £2.50 a week, meanwhile getting rid of any experienced players earning more than £1000.00 a week, getting rid as in cancelled contracts, loans, but definitely no money in for them. What manager can possibly do this. I would like to think that somewhere in the near future there will be another Lionel Pickering, but i fear not. As i have not heard any different i take it both green & bailey are staying with us to the summer, so lets hope we can push on again, starting with skudding forest on sunday.”

“It seems as though every time there is reason to build hope for a good season, of late through determination, (seeming) team togetherness and no shortage of ability and/or potential Nigel comes along with a pistol firmly pointed at his own foot. Green and Bailey should have been on the pitch - end of! Clough should rightly take credit for the postive stuff and for the opposite such as last night's 1st half shambles, and for the overall effect of 'flattering to deceive' in the most frustrating extreme when this happens...again and again! I will continue to believe that we are heading in the right direction but for **** sake will the Glick, the board back the manager properly if they share the fans' and no doubt Clough's ambitions for our great club and don't dictate any further farcical deviations from progress by trying to save a few measily quid, as appeared to be the case last night!! If not you will lose the vast majority of fans who, unlike the likes of 'Ibelieve' and 'Qakid' (2 sides of the same coin), are informed, balanced and sensible - faithful but not gullible, when it comes to their club!!!”

    “IGNORE QUACKID ,HE'S QUACKERS.

Games like last night happen , get over it,Barnsley caught
us cold for the 1st 45 , thats all ,perhaps it was a reaction
from the Stoke game and the feeling that no matter how you
play well refs like Clatterfool will see you cheated out of
giving a good account of yourselves.
The ref last night sounded of the same ilk and waved away 2-3
shouts for a pens, one stonewall on new lad Carroll.
The pen they were awarded sounded dubious too...

But thats football ,ask West spam who conceded 5 last night.

Anyways ,Bailey and Green got to put theyre feet up and we are
ready to go for the next game , even Tyson getting 30min under his
belt ...now who do we play next ...eerrrrrrrrrm ,oh yes ...them up the 52.

Footballs coming home sunday ...you see.

    keep the faith.”
