THE director of a country park social club said she was "over the moon" after it received top marks in a hygiene inspection.

The Mickleover Country Park Social Club received the five-star rating from South Derbyshire District Council during its latest inspection.

Dianne Adlington, 61, took over the running of the Merlin Way club in January 2008. She said: "Getting five stars in the inspection is a great achievement for us after five years of hard graft.

"We were inspected a couple of years ago and got three stars, so I would have been happy with that rating again.

"When I got the certificate through I was thrilled that we had achieved the top score.

"It's taken a lot of hard work to get it where it is and now the challenge will be maintaining it – but I am determined and I want to club to be the best it can be."

The club was inspected in October and had to make changes to the covers on the bar. These were done and, on the second inspection, it was awarded five stars.

Ms Adlington took on the club, formally known as Pastures, with the aim of making it more of a place that the whole community could use.

She said: "Previously it was only the members of the golf club that could use it.

"But now I've opened it up to the whole community. The main room can be hired out for whatever family occasion – including birthdays, retirement parties, wedding receptions, anything really.

"The money from the room hire pays the bills. Everything else is a bonus and keeps us ticking over.

"We get people in on every day of the week – the golfers who have come to the end of their 18 holes and the families who want to come in for a drink or something to eat."

Until last summer, Ms Adlington worked as a childminder on top of running the club. She said: "I'd been a childminder for 26 years, but towards the end it was really difficult to juggle everything. I retired from that last year and I'm now concentrating fully on the club.

"I really enjoy it and love to make everyone feel welcome."
